When he'd finished up what little work there had been for the day himself..  Mostly experimenting with the window dressings..  He'd taken Remy's note..  Flipped it over, and scribbled an answer in his own scratch like writing.  Ledgible, but not very.  He'd been taught to read and write by someone who spoke english as a second language.
