The movie played on, some thriller of some sort or other. The volume was turned low, the whispering parts barely audible to a human's ear. Since the feminine form laying on the couch didn't belong to a human, it was safe to say she had no trouble hearing if she wanted to. Two small, gray feline forms lay along her bare legs, effectively pinning her in place for the moment. A hand slid down to her hip, straightening the overly large blue t-shirt she wore.
Valarie stared at the television screen without really seeing the pictures that flashed by. She should have been studying for her last two exams, or even assisting Beaver at the college, but she couldn't focus on those things just now.
Once more, she replayed the phone conversation of only two hours ago.
"Hello." "Hey, Vali-girl, it's Charles." "Oh, hey, big brother. What's up? You sound.. troubled." "Well, I don't know exactly how to put this.." "Charles, you're starting to scare me. Has something happened to Mama or Papa, to Nathan?" "Whoa, whoa, whoa. The family's all fine. I just thought that someone should let you know that we found the woman you told us about. We found Sarah. Val.. honey.. she was found murdered about three days ago after talking to the police." "Sarah.. she.. she's dead?" "I'm sorry, honey. The police haven't shared much information with us, but you know how Papa's got friends on the force.. well, it wasn't pretty." "Tell me, Charles. How did they find her?" "Honey, you really don't want to --" "Just tell me!" "All right, all right. She was found.. torn up. It looked like wild animals had gotten to her, but they're almost positive it was lycanthropes that actually killed her." "My god.." "Listen, they're having the funeral on Monday. Do you want to --" "No! I.. I can't. I have an exam and I'm not ready to.. come back yet. Please, just give me time." "Okay, Vali-girl, okay. I just thought you should know. I love you, little sister." "Thanks. I love you, too. And Charles?" "Yeah?" "What was her full name, do you know?" "Sarah N. Powell."
"Sarah, I'm so sorry. I should have gotten you to leave with me."Whispered words were lost in the sounds coming from the television. The only thing she could think about was whether or not Sarah had been able to give the police the vital information that would keep that so-called pard from hurting anyone else. Brave Sarah, she had talked to police and the cost had been her life.
Memories paraded through the shy kitten's mind. Sarah's kindness and tears for one scared, wounded young woman. Sarah's gentle hands soothing across a fevered brow. Sarah trying to protect her from the alphas even though it meant a beating awaited her. Valarie couldn't imagine what Sarah's mother must be going through right now. Didn't want to imagine it.
Guilt clawed at her insides. She should have gone home before coming to Hawaii. She should have gone and tried to get Sarah away from there. If she had done any number of things maybe this wouldn't have happened. Silently, she reprimanded herself. When bad things happened, no amount of wishing or 'what-ifs' would change it. Sarah Powell was gone.
The credits rolled as the movie on the television came to an end. If only life were like a movie. No matter who died or got hurt in a movie, after the credits rolled they were fine. But, life wasn't like a movie. There were no pause or rewind buttons, no way to take things back and make them right. It hurt and it was unfair, but life went on.
With a heavy sigh, she pulled her notes and text books into her lap to go over the information that she'd need for the exam. The television droned on as background noise in an attempt to keep her from drifting back toward the hurt and guilt she felt over Sarah's death.
Of course, halfway through the exam prep quiz, she fell asleep. If anyone happened into the living room, they'd find her with an arm flung out and papers strewn on or around her, a text book open face down on her chest.
-Milo was half way through his second bottle of Jameson when he rolled up in the driveway of the rodere house on the custom chopper his loving wife had bought for him. She was a good woman with a great set of tits. What more could a man ask for? Cigarette hung from between thin lips as he moved to the door. Stomping off sand from his bananna yellow high tops before going in the door. Between the wallet chain slapping against his thigh and his heavy footsteps he wasn't the quietest guy especially for a damn lycan. Going into the kitchen he ground the cigarette out in an ashtray near the sink and went straight for the fridge. Inside was half a burger that someone hadn't finished which meant it was fair game now. Grabbing it he had half of it gone in one large bite. Crumbs from the bun fell down onto his shirt as he walked towards the living room to watch TV. One hand had the burger and the other had the bottle of whiskey.-
-Stopping when he saw Valerie laid out like that he had a confused look on his face. Guess this meant no monster truck rallys. Practically shoving the rest of the burger in his mouth till his cheeks puffed out he set the bottle of Jameson on the coffee table. Val looked wiped so he went and tried to be careful, or as careful as a gruff bastard like him could be. Moving her study stuff and lifting her in his arms. Where to? Only one place he could think of. Milo carried the sleeping leopard up to the room he and Barbie shared. There were always other rats and cats in there. When he pushed the door open with the toe of his hightop he saw Knox, Barbie, and some unknown lump under the covers to be named later.-
"Barb baby. Make a little room."
-Milo went to the side of the bed and bent down to lay Valerie down next to Barbie to share the rat queens warmth. Letting Barb cover her he leaned across and kissed his gorgeous blonde wife. Hard to get lucky with kids in the bed, but thats what showers were for. For now though Monster Trucks awaited him in the living room. He'd come up and join the slumber party later.-
::Sleepy eyes fluttering open hearing Milo's gruff voice. She raised a brow looking at him behind a set of long lashes. The sleeping form in his hands, his soft voice. Who could ever think a man like him had a heart of gold? Aurriana moved a little over, with the bundle under the sheets. Knox, more than likely giving out a noise being bothered in his sleep.
A small smirk to the stunt-rat. The covers were pulled back to have Valerie rest against her. Tucking them both in. Aurriana pushed back Valerie's soft brown hair. The touch was soothing, very motherly. Blond head moved to reach for Milo placing her lips against his before giving him a smile. Resting her head back on her pillow, arm wrapped around Valerie's form. She stayed awake long enough to make sure everyone in the room was safe and sound asleep. Reaching carefully to the night stand she would take up her cell phone. Dialing Dade's number. Once he answered she would smile.
"Shakes come cuddle with us."
He mumbled his answer. Aurriana would hang up soon after. Phone was set on the night table again. Nose rubbing along Valerie's neck as she slept against the leopard.::
She was dreaming. Words and pictures from her text books chased her through a forest, demanding she memorize them. All right, it more closely resembled a nightmare.
Warm hands lifting her sent the dream images scurrying away. Eyes fluttered briefly, allowing chocolate brown orbs to take in Milo's form. A sleepy murmer and faint smile were given as she snuggled against his chest, drifting between sleep and wakefulness. Oddly enough, Milo's loud footsteps were reassuring because of their familiarity.
By the time he had her up to the room he shared with Barbie, she was drifting back into a deeper state of sleep. However, being moved from the rat king's warmth to the bed had her making a small sound of disappointment. But then Barbie's warmth enveloped her and she snuggled close to the rat queen.
She vaguely heard Barbie speaking, but then she was sucked back into sleep, the bane of all college students who were trying to study for exams. Well, later would be plenty soon enough to get back to the books. Right now, she was comfortably snuggled in bed with some of the rodere, warm and content, and she didn't fancy forcing herself to wake up anytime soon.
