Carnivals, like Salem's Canival De Nui, are places of fun and sometimes intrigue. The rides and the shows draw crowds of all ages and at times from across state lines. However, recently, the crowd got a wild ride that even they didn't expect or will forget anytime soon.
What started out as a wonderful night of fun, turned into chaos filled with panic and fear as an unidentified female lycanthrope, shape shifted form in the middle of the crowd of people. The event could not be gone unnoticed by even the most liberal minded.
From witness acounts, the nature of the lycanthrope is belived to be of the Hyaenidae family, also known as Hyenas.
[Side by side are two photographs. One featuring a sientific photograph of a Spotted Hyena. Next to it is a blurred image of a lycantrhope from the carnival. The image is blured, but the general shape could be made out. Clearly not a professional looking job. Bellow the photographs are captions. Photograph one comes from of National Geographic. Photo Two is credited as Timothy Dawson, 13.]
According to eye witness reports, the incident began with an alterecation between two women. One of whom was described as a woman of average heigh and dark hair. When questioned about possible leads, Federal Marshal Ash Redfern, also a member of the Salem Preternatural Investigation Team (SPIT) said, "We have a few suspects who are being questioned in this case." Timothy Dawson, 13, was the amature photorapher at the scene. Was with his family for a night of fun before begining a new school year, Timothy having bought a new Kodak Disposalbe Digital, used it to capture the scenes of chaos rather than a family's good time at a carnival. "I just pointed the camera and started shooting, I don't think I got anything good anyway, everyone was screaming so I thought it'd be cool photograph it," said young Mr. Dawson. Mrs. Janice Dawson, Timothy's mother was outraged by what had happend. "Everyday there's something about violence on TV, vampire, shapeshifter, I thought I could take my kids away from that and let them have some fun and ...then that happend. Is there no place that's safe?" Mrs. Dawson isn't the onlyone who is concerned about the escalated levels of preternatural activity. Mr. Simon Evans, a spokesperson for a local Humans First chapter, had voiced his outrage over what transpired. "We keep telling the government that these Lycanthropes are not as safe or tame as everyone would lead them to belive. What happend at the Carnival De Nuit shows that. They cannot be allowed to roam free and unchecked. How long does this need to go on before something truly horrible happens again and again? Soon humans will be a minority."
During the ongoing investigation the police have asked that anyone with helpful information contact 555-3569
Over his morning cup of coffee Ash read Faith's article and nearly spit his turkish blend out at the paper when he started to laugh at young Timothy Dawsons response. God Bless the young and how easily they cope with things. The article also reminded him of the interview he had set up for Faith. Picking up his phone he flipped it open and left her a quick message.
"Faith, Ash Redfern here. He can meet with you on Sunday at Club Bliss. Go to the front and ask for Bruno, he'll be expecting you."
No goodbyes, just hung up. Faith would know who the "he" was, and she would also know he'd be calling in this favor at some point in trade for something that he might need. This odd connection and comraderie he had developed with the reporter puzzled him, but he tried not to question it.
Between studies and moving her stuff into the pard/rodere house for the two weeks before the full moon Mia had neglected the usuals of her daily routine. Not all of them of course, studying, more studying and even more studying. It wasn't until she ventured to the city that she saw the newspaper in a trash can in passing. Pausing she let her eyes scan what she thought was a picture of a hyena. Glancing around she reached into the garbage can and lifted out the newspaper. Unfolding it she spread it open before her to see the truth of the article. The blood drained from her face literally, leaving her shaking and ghostly white. Someone had seen her. Someone had taken photographs. Although there was no clear mention of anyone indian or hindu to give away her idenity she quickly folded the paper up and ran for it.
Hours later when she was safely tucked into the room she was using at the Pard house did she open the news paper and re-read the article top to bottom. Although they had gotten the species right they had missed slightly. She wasn't spotted, she was brown, not that it made much difference. Stomach turned over in abject fear. Ash's name was mentioned and even though the laws had been broken and Marcus knew and had forgiven her the simple title of Human's First bespoke more fear in the hyena then possible.
Leaning over she openned her backpack rummaging around till she found the cellphone. Turning it on, since it was barily ever used she scanned through the numbers before finding the one for the pack house. After a few rings the machine picked up and she waited for the beep.
"It's M-Mia. I saw the paper, I'm not sure what you want me to do Ash. I'm going to show Patsy as well if she hasn't already seen it. It was just a big misunderstanding. One of the tigers thought I was the little vampires mother, and... and she tried to stop me running away from her." A loud gulp could be heard. "But she drug me back.. I was so afraid, I knew the vampire would hurt me. I-I-I-I lost control, let me know what I have to do. "
She hung up and stared at the newspaper in disbelief. She was more trouble then good it seemed.
Llidya slapped the newspaper with the back of her right hand, and set it on the bar where the page with the side by side comparison could easily be seen by either man on each side of her. They of course sent her a sidelong glances and looked to the paper, as she started to talk, pointing to the pictures.
"Totally bogus. That's soo not a real lycanthrope. Just some prank that somebody pulled to freak people out, very rude. See, they even got the colors all wrong. This, this is a hyena." She pointed to the picture on the left, the one from the National Geographic. The two guys nodded. "I mean, the lady didn't even have to put that picture in the paper, ya know?" They nodded again. Then the guy on her right looked back up to her, pointing to the picture on the right.
"Yeah but how can you be sure that's not a werewolf hyena?"
"Psh." Llidya brushed him off, and lifted her right hand, which had a camera dangling from it.
"Because, duh, it showed up in the photograph." Then the guy on her left spoke after her simple explanation.
"Whaddya mean?"
"Don'tcha know that supernaturals like vampires and werewolves don't show up in photos? Cause they don't have a reflection, only that's not true, they do have a reflection, they just don't picture."
"I thought it was just vampires-" "Yeah it's only vampires-" They both started, but Llidya waved them off.
"Nope, it's both of 'em. 's why I carry this camera every where. Only holds like, 18 pictures, but I only need to take one of somebody to know if they're a supernatural or not. And then I can erase it. Cheap little digital camera...6 mega pixels too." Llidya told them, looking back and forth between the two, seeing the understanding in their eyes. She of course, didn't believe a word of what she was saying, she knew the truth. But she played at it, it was part of her alternate persona. Somewhat simple but catches on fast.
"So, see? It's not a real werehyena, I think is what it'd be called if it was. Good story though, like the article. By the way, I've yet to meet a supernatural 'cause everyone I take pictures of show up. Now, on to more important matters-" Llidya spoke, opening up the newspaper and flipping it over, and folding it again. "You's guys know a five letter word for main artery?"
Xanto had been busy with his work and since the article had been published there was a lot of talk going around the office at City Hall. Since he had been wanting to make a good impression upon his fellow co-workers he had been cheating so to speak, using his a few of his spells to help move up the social ladder. Mostly it is his silver tongued spell as he's normally seen drinking tea on his breaks. It was such a touchy subject with how to handle the shapeshifters, if go hard one way the one group will get angry and vice versa. But yet something has to be done, that was certain in Xanto's mind even if it is hoax. It was a prod to get something moving. So he would take the bait, it would be a push to do one of his goals. While with the mayor after a long and boring meeting he finally put his two cents in about the topic. "You know... We can do what Philly did. Have a registery for the lycans and the vampires. Just so we know if one of them does cause problems, it would be easy to pick the troublemaker out of the bunch. Since I was around that time in Philly, I'm sure I can come up with a working model based off of it. Just give me a few days to write the proposal, Sir... It will surely make the public feel safer." And if his spell was working, the mayor would agree to it. "And you can take all the credit for it, too." No sense in painting target upon his back, let someone else take all the credit that would perhaps draw some heat from. It will surely be a busy week now with checking laws, the city's consitution, and many hours spent on writing. He had no doubt it will surely upset the supernatural population, luckily witches are human enough to slip through these cracks. But if there was one thing Xanto was great at when writing in legal terms is he can spin many catch 22s and make them work for the purpose at hand. Yes, the fact that a registery is being thought of would piss off of many, but if he gets it right it will more or else benfit them more than that the general population believes.
