Raine sighed as she leaned back on one of her chairs, foot propped up against the wall. The cat, forgive the pun, wouldn't have been out of the bag if she hadn't run into Mary Jane. As she thought about the encounter, she grimaced. MJ had been one of her favorites once upon a time. Then again, Raine didn't have favorites anymore. She didn't even have semi-favorites. But she couldn't avoid the horde forever, not just because Adam didn't deserve it, but because apparently it was a small world, after all.
With lips purse, Raine touched the tip of the pen to the stationary she'd bought, penning the first words that came to mind in a letter to her partner. Or, former partner.
Dear Adam, I'm really not quite sure what to say in a letter that wouldn't be better said in person. But to that end, I'm not sure what I could possibly say in person that would change anything, either. You must know, surely you must know, that I wouldn't have .. that there is a reason behind everything. A cause and effect, and I apologize if any effect has given you reason to believe our tigers meant nothing to me. I am in Rome. The decision in writing to you comes as a hard one, but as I said .. there isn't much to say in a letter that can make everything better. In fact, there may be nothing at all to make anything better in the long run, yes? The truth is, I don't know where I stand right now. I do know that I am not looking to be a leader, not when I cannot even lead myself. Cryptic words, even from me, but perhaps their meaning will become clear to you in the end. I don't know that I'm ready to see you, but I do know that I could give myself that excuse forever. I have rented a villa just outside of the city, a place where I can adjust to this new life. Although I'm not entirely sure Mary Jane won't spill the beans, I would appreciate it if we could speak alone before anyone else is informed of my being here. I shouldn't be too hard to reach, my new cell number, euro trash phone that I've got, is [insert cell# here]. I do understand if you would prefer I stay away. I would probably want that, myself, if I were you. Either way, I hope to hear back from you so that I can make clear what is shrouded in gray. I make no promises that I am, or that I can ever go back to being, someone you can accept. I suppose, in time, we may see. Sincerely, Raine Once she had completed the letter, she tucked it into an envelope and had the messenger she'd hired to deliver it take it away. She figured Adam would be easy enough to track down. And once she had finished, she simply leaned back again, kitty cat eyes watching out the window as she lost herself in thought.
-:The letter brought by the courier had come as a surprise. Adam was outside working on some carpentry for the new kitchen when the Sedan pulled up in the driveway of the Horde's new home. Setting aside his tools he pushed the safety goggles up on his head and moved to intercept the man. When handed the letter he asked the man to wait while he read it and swiftly tore his finger through the seal of the envelope. Pulling out the letter he unfolded it carefully and let his eyes scan the words on the page.:-
-:What he read in the letter had him confused. The last time that he had heard from Raine he had thought she was leaving the island to go back to the States to work for some kind of biochemical research team. That had been what she had said. He'd always respected her desire to save people through her skills as a diagnostician. So the veiled references about things she had done and choices she had made were met with a raising of one of those permanently curved brows.:-
-:There had been so many tragedies between Hawaii and Rome. Gillian had almost died twice, and he had stepped down as the tiger's Khan. Changes had occured, but as always Adam was working towards creating a brighter dawn. He didn't know how to live any other way. Why she would think he would expect or want her to stay away was a mystery, but there was one way to solve that.:-
-:Borrowing a pen from the courier he turned over the letter and wrote on the back in his simple flowing script. The return letter was short, but conveyed his thoughts in a pure simple state.:-
Raine,
There is nothing to be made better. All is well and in it's place. Meet me this weekend at the dog park in the Travia Della Nonna. I'll be there with Jake.
You are accepted, you are loved, see you soon,
Adam Hunter
-:Signing the letter he refolded it and slipped it back inside the envelope. Since the seal was torn he tucked the lip of the envelope back into the opening and handed it to the man with a kind smile. The courier grumbled a bit at first about returning the letter, but that smile seemed to calm him a bit. By the time he reached Raine he would be all smiles. Something about contact with Adam just seemed to leave people a little lighter than they had been before.:-
