Back arched in pain as black eyes flew open. The clamp in her mouth muffling the scream that tore from her body. Arms struggled against the straps holding her arms down to the side of the hospital bed. The bright light of the moveable lamp hung over her face blinding her as she struggled. Faces swam across her vision in distorted shapes. Panic. Her body was in panic even as hands and bodies struggled to hold her down. It was only when her body started to weaken and her struggling stopped that the large needle was removed from her chest. Gauze was pressed to the hole it left.
Adrenaline hit her like a smack to her face, and before her mind could react her limbs where moving again. Twisting lurching. Eyes rolled back as her screams continued for what seemed like hours. The Adrenaline rode the last of the cocaine out of her system leaving her nearly dead to the world.
Hour’s later fingers on her wrist woke her from the blackness of exhausted sleep. Eyes peeled open, light blinded her for a moment and caused a moan of pain. And with the first realization she was alive the rest of her pain ran through her system causing eyes to water up and spill over. The ventilator tube down her throat caused her lips to twitch, hands lifting in an effort to try and remove the tube from her throat. Wrists cuffed and bruised nearly completely black and blue where stopped half way. The nurse came into view as her body twisted trying to calm her down. She tightened the straps on Nori's wrists before moving to the door and called down the hallway for the doctor.
The doctor a middle aged Hawaiian man, leaning more toward fat then in shape came into view. His voice was calm and soothing or should have been but Nori protested as much as her weary body would let her. She kept trying to lift her hands to claw the tube out of her mouth. Two nurses followed him into the room as the doctor moved behind her gripping her head. The Nurses put there shoulders and sides into Nori's own Shoulders. Take a breath they said and the gauze wrap tied around her head keeping the tube in place was cut before he gripped her forehead and with practiced ease it was slide from her throat. The minute it cleared her air way she was coughing violently. Then blackness.
Another couple of hours had passed and now her shoulder was bandaged, arm popped back into the socket. Eyes lifted, heavy as steel curtains. She groaned her throat burning raw. The needle in her arm sedating her to the point of feeling sick. She hurt, she hurt real good. Her hand lifted, nearly all of her wrist black and blue. Fingers peeled the tape off her skin and then slid the needle out of her hand and dropped it on the floor. When the machine started to beep loudly in her ear she could only roll over. The nurse of course came bustling in and demanded to know why she had removed the needle. Nori rolled over and stared at the woman. Thick black rings lay under her dead eyes matching the same black around her wrists.
"I don't want to be on drugs."
Voice was rough with abuse, first from her screaming and then second from the tube down her throat. It was just that simple, that's what had gotten her into that mess and she didn't want to touch another drug in her life. Eyes closed ignoring the woman as she puttered about the room. Checking her temp and her blood pressure and all the things the fancy machine's did. When the woman asked her if she wanted anything she smirked faintly.
"Tell me how soon I can leave. I don't give a shit about anything else, I want to be discharged."
The woman gave a huff of anger and marched out of the solitary room. Hopefully a doctor would come soon so she could get her stuff and go. She didn't want to be here, she had someplace important to go and if they didn't appease her she would simply pick up her shit, put it back on and leave.
It was only after the night shift had switched to the day shift that Nori was truely restless. Her body was exhasted and drained but she didn't want to be there. They had moved her out of ICU and into a different wing.
Doctors, Nurses, even the shrink had come in to talk to her about what had happened. Asking why she had hand prints around her neck? Why had she tried to kill herself? Why was she doing drugs? Who was she with when it happened? All she had said was she wanted to leave. The shrink, bright and chipper blonde who made Nori want to vomit told her they had to keep her under watch for 72 hours. Nori knew before they said it, suicide watch. Where they fucking crazy? She didn't want to die, she just wanted to leave.
Although they wouldn't allow her to check herself out they did give her back her cellphone. Snatching it away from a older nurse she muttered and turned on her side in the bed, dialing Faith's number. She got her voicemail but she could at least let the woman know where she was. Her voice was rough and gravelly from the tube still.
"Hey Faith, it's Nori. Listen, I'm down at County General Hospital. These fuckers think I'm suicidal or some shit. I'm in room 403. Gimmie a call and keep me sane before these nosy fucks really drive me crazy. Or stop by and bring me something to eat, this food tastes like cardboard."
She would hang up and bury her face in the pillow, she just wanted them to leave her alone and let her leave. Was it too much to ask? She hadn't OD'ed she was taught a very good lesson, big difference. Since they had finally listened to her about the morphine for her shoulder, they had switched her drip bag out with a saline bag keeping her body hydrated. The food was ignored, hospital food sucked anyway. Who wanted a fucking dry ass turkey sandwich and applesause? What the fuck? How old was she? Applesause!?!?
Days off were like mini vacations, minus the packing, un-packing, travel and all the hassles that made Faith glad she already lived in a vacation destination. Mother nature having outdone itself just for Faith. The sky was azure blue with puffy white clouds rolling lazily across the big blue yonder while a cooler than normal breeze kept the humidity away. It was a day to roll down your windows, and drive at high speeds with music blaring. Which Faith was wholly intended on doing, as soon as the mechanic finished his inspection of her car's engine. The "check engine" light decided to pick that morning as the day it would make its debut. And no amount of rude language from Faith was going to make it go away.
So there she was, watching the clouds roll on by from the comfort of bench outside the garage with an iced coffee cup perspiring it's agreement next to her. "What's that Coffee? You think we're going to get ass raped on the estimate to fix what ever it is that's broken? I agree! Good thing we're in Hawaii or things could really be bad!" A mother taking her child for a walk paused ten feet away and gave Faith a suspicious once over, before tugging her little precious across the street in the opposite direction. Faith felt like toasting her new found status as "one of those people" and did just that by taking a swig of the coffee. Mid sip her cellphone rang, announcing she had a voice mail. When the hell did that happen?
Slightly annoyed, Faith navigated through the options that allowed her to get to her voice mail and pressed the Blackberry to her ear.
Blinking at a particularly misshapen cloud, Faith hit replay and listened to it again. Nori was in the Hospital? That didn't hold nearly as much interest as the bit about the staff thinking the Asian woman was suicidal. Faith met Nori. The woman probably had a death wish that's for sure, but suicidal? What ever it was, it warranted more than just a phone call.
Leaving her car in the grease covered and yet otherwise capable hands of the mechanic, Faith snagged a taxi (light blue with a dancing hula girl on the dash board, don't you just love it) and after a stop at a local dinner, headed over to the Hospital. It took some self navigating, and asking an orderly which way room 403 was, but Faith found it. It wasn't in the overly populated part of the building. This was a wing where if people screamed, they wouldn't disturb the already distraught visitors. Nice. The cheery colors were especially a nice touch, as was the sickening odor of industrial cleaner and that smell that only hospitals had, the kind that made you very happy you were only visiting.
Peeking around the door frame, Faith reached inside and knocked on the wall loud enough to bruise her knuckles and get Nori's attention.
"Hi there Missa Nori! I'm Faith, and I'll be your Candy Striper during your stay at SeeGee." With a grin tugging at her lips, because she simply could not help herself, Faith headed into the room without really being invited.
"Can I offer you some refreshments? Apple Juice with a straw? Green Jello? Enema?" And considering the amount of calories that inhabited the food that laid dormant inside a large paper bag, enemas were a very real possibility. Later. For now, Faith set the bag of goodies on the movable table/tray and wheeled it over to Nori, before planting herself in the visitors chair and eying the woman as if all the answers would be revealed to her visually, and in the middle of Nori's forehead.
"I brought you something something that could potentially kill all the heart patients in this place so this better be good. Like, why are you here and why do they think you're suicidal?"
The knocking on the wall drew her out of her light sleep. She had the blinds drawn and everything was quiet and dark in that room. Even the beeping machines where quiet, that was after Nori's loud and obnoxious protest. She lifted her head from the pillow and rolled on to her back, shoulder screaming in pain as she did so. A grin rolled across her lips when she saw Faith and thank god!!! Food!!!
She fiddled with the buttons on the side of the bed till it sat her up and she could look at the reporter. Death warmed over right? Hands lifted nearly ripping open the bag and what ever wholesome goodies it had inside she would start putting in her mouth. Making a oh my god, this is heaven face. Once she got something into her rummbling stomach she leaned back feet shifting under the nice clean white linens. "I think I love you Faith.. I really do. " She made a face when the nurse poked her head in to see she had a guest. The woman openned her mouth to complain that she shouldn't have guests or be accepting anything that wasn't inspected first for sharp objects. Nori turned her eyes on the woman and she grinned. "If you don't get out of my room, I swear on all things holy and not, I'm going to throw one of these machines at you. You really think I'm going try to kill myself with a burger!!! GET OUT OF MY ROOM!"
The woman looked like she couldn't care less but did leave, leaving the door open as Nori looked back at Faith. "God damn, they think because I OD'ed that I was trying to kill myself. They got me under a 72 hour watch to make sure I don't off myself. No matter how much I tell them I don't want to die or didn't try to kill myself they tend to belive other wise, stupid fucks."
She lifted the burger and took a huge bite and chewed in contentment savoring the flavor simply because it wasn't as Faith mentioned Jello. Who the fuck eats Jello for a meal?!?! Setting the burger back down she grinned. "Yeah so, I Od'ed on cocaine and now I'm here. Novack gave it to me, and apparently the stuff is potent, like undiluted or something. Had me tripping balls and then, well I don't know how I got here. " She tugged the top of the hospital gown down to show the spot above her chest where the needle mark was, the surrounding skin black and blue. "They had to give me a shot of adreneline cause I was pretty bad. But now that your here, I have a favor to ask. Well it's favor but it's not. If I give you directions can you go to my house and get my laptop? That video is on there, plus some of the records from Humans First. I'd like you to expose them, if possible. I have access to all of there records since I'm the IT person." Most of what Nori said was true, some was little white lies. But she was on a mission.
To say that Faith was shocked would probably be an understatement. When her eyes followed Nori's hand when she tugged the neck of her hospital down, they grew even wider than they already were. Wincing in phantom pain, Faith reached up and rubbed a spot on her own chest. Just seeing the needle mark made her own body ache. "Coke? Seriously, of all the things don't you know how stu..." Catching herself just in time, Faith held up her hands and shook her head.
"Sorry, sorry. Switched to preachy mode. Main thing you're alive, you're alright...seriously Nori, someone up there must be watching out for you because..." Faith pointed at the needle mark in the middle of Nori's chest. "...Damn!"
Reaching out, Faith snagged one of the fries that have fallen out of their now nearly invisible paper container (lots of grease would do that,) and popped it into her mouth, chewing thoughtfully for a moment before nodding. "Yeah it's not a problem. I can swing by there today. And this Novack character? It would be my pleasure to expose that asshole to the world."
Because Faith hated drug dealers. Also he was HF. So was Nori, but the woman was clearly brainwashed by the propaganda. Faith had seen many a rational human being foam at the mouth after reading one of HF's pamphlets. People always needed a social group to hate. Now that KKK was downright archaic, HF stepped in to fill the void they had left. And Faith hated people like that with a passion.
"Do you want me to bring you anything else from your place while I'm over there?"
Nori watched Faith respond about her addiction. She gave a nod knowing just how bad it was for her. Thing was, she wasn't ever going to do it again. She had been taught her lesson with extra even. Although possibly Shane did it with the whole tough love thing. Sometimes hard headed people like Nori just needed to remember they where mortal and that things like drugs, or rather illegal drugs are illegal for a reason. "It's okay you can preach at me all you like. I know it was stupid, it was monumental stupid but well yeah... Apparently someone is rooting for me somewhere."
She shifted on the bed and tugged the sheet up a little higher since they kept the damn air conditioning on freeze your fucking ass off degrees. "That should be good. Maybe some new clothes, what ever is in the laudry basket on my bed. I got blood on my other clothes.. Also when you get back I'll show you everything on my laptop. Oh and my laptop is... i think it's on the bed in the brown backpack. But in the computer room, there is a zip drive right next to the mouse, bring that with you too. " She reached over and pulled open the dresser draw beside the bed and got her keys out before handing them over to Faith. She pointed at the one that would open the door before leaning back in the bed. Picking at the food at a more sedate pace.
"I'll be getting out Friday night, they can't keep me past 72 hours anyway. And it's not like I'm trying to kill myself. I just made a really fucked decision and that's how I got here. But they don't want to listen." She paused to take a bite of the food chewing in contented happiness. "Thanks for doing this Faith, I really appreciate it."
