Salem Doll Murders

By: Faith Danovan

A mother in tears had taken a day of work to place a wreath of flowers over a freshly cleaned portion of pavement. Only days ago a body of a murdered woman had been found there. The body had not yet been released to the custody of the family, pending an examination by the Salem medical examiner. The most unfortunate part of this is that this scene is not new to Salem.

Recently a string of missing persons and murders have held the city of Salem and its citizens, in a grip of fear. A number of missing women have been found dead under mysterious circumstances. The bodies have been drained of blood, yet a vampire attack has been ruled out as the cause of death. "There were no puncture marks found on the body, that is all I can say at this time. Yes the bodies were drained of blood, no there were no puncture marks that could be identified." said, Sphinx, Salem's Medical Examier.

The latest victim, a woman, has been found within the Salem Witch's Museum. She was wearing what could only be described as a doll costume, complete with theatric makeup.

(Next to the article is a photo. Printed in the grainy black dot newspaper print the photo is dark. The shadows cover most of the right hand side of the photo but the image of the "doll" like person in the center is slightly out of focus but clear enough to be startling.)

When questioned, the police spokesperson had only this to say. "We cannot confirm nor deny the identity of the victims or the method in which they were killed. All information will become available to the public as soon as we find out who or what is doing this." The rest of the questions have been met with no comment.

However a sliver of hope maybe on the horizon, to shed some light on the situation. An altercation took place at the club Bliss, earlier this week. According to numerous eyewitnesses the incident occurred between the Local Vampire Executioner and an unidentified female. "She was hissing and I think she'd have killed somebody," said a gentleman who refused to be identified due to fear of retribution.

Coincidence of wishful thinking to the identify of the mysterious killer? Unfortunately only time will tell.

At the request of the families of the victims, the names of the victims have been withheld. It is the sincerest hope of this publication that the criminal be apprehended as soon as possible. Anyone with information regarding the crime is asked to call the police hotline at 555-6956.

Sometimes it was easy to believe that he was the only person in Salem who read the paper or watched the news. Perched on a stool in the morgue he was passing the time of day with Sphinx, the county medical examiner, and man of a thousand sandwhiches. Ash rustled the paper, looking over the edge of it to catch sight of the bohemoth of a man, sitting behind his desk with what appeared to be a giant meatball sub cluthched between his greasy paws. Oh how the dead would shake and quiver to know that their bodies were being manhandled by this replica of the Stay-Pufft marshmellow man.

"She mentions you in here mate." Ash quoted from the article. "The body had not yet been released to the custody of the family, pending an examination by the Salem medical examiner." With a laugh he looked back across at Sphinx. "I think she's trying to say that you're slow, keeping the poor girls family waiting."

Sphinx took a bite of the sandwhich, flecks of red sauce clinging to the inner edge of his lips. It was eerie in a vampiric way, probably only because there were two fresh corpses naked and laid out on their cold metal slabs awaiting that same mans attentions. "Nobody cares about waiting once they're dead." Sphinx's tongue snaked out and licked his lips. "If people were half as pleasent alive as they were dead then I might even get out more." The man yawned, showing Ash a lovely view of chewed food that was still in his mouth. Manners were a lost art. Then Sphinx was up from his chair, moving to wash his hands at the sink and strap on a pair of latex gloves. Back to work for him it seemed. So Ash looked back at the paper and continued to read Faith's article.

It was always strange to see things written up about cases that he was working on. So often things were distorted for the pleasure of whatever audience the specific paper was trying to reach. He remembered once the National Inquirer had actually speculated that he was an alien working for the government. That had been an entertaining concept.

Ash quoted aloud again, his voice dry with humor. "When questioned, the police spokesperson had only this to say. We cannot confirm nor deny the identity of the victims or the method in which they were killed." Off to his right he heard the sound of Shpinx deep gut-laugh. "I've never understood why they even bother to talk to the media if they aren't going to say anything."

Article finished he shook his head folding the paper up as he slid off the stool. The paper would be laid on top of Sphinx's desk. "You'll call me when you're done with that rape kit?"

Sphinx didn't even look up from his work, but Ash saw the beginnings of the mans face. "I can neither confirm nor deny that."

This time Ash laughed as well, the barest of chuckles as he peeled off his own gloves and tossed them in the waste receptacle. "Thank you Sphinx, you're earning your name with that one" Then without a good-bye Ash left knowing he would be back. His life was so caught up with the dead that he knew he couldn't stay away long. They always calle dhim back.

-Well, well, well. Trouble on the horizon, or so it seemed. Patsy shook her head and gave a long yawn. She was settled on a lounge chair out beside the pool. That itsy bitsy white string bikini giving her a chance to tan herself to perfection. She was just a lazy kitten passing a day in relaxation. Hips twisted as she propped herself onto her side looking over at the woman sleeping on the lounge chair beside her. Patsy dipped long elegant fingers into her glass of water, french tipped nails pinching a cube of ice. Reaching across she let the ice touch Tiffany's skin, from her shoulder and over the gentle swell of one perfectly taut breast, oh how angry Milo was going to be when he found out that his little jail bait had been claimed. The girl swatted playfully at Patsy's hand with a laugh and rolled over to tan her back. Since she was naked she wouldn't have to worry about tan-lines, and Patsy got to enjoy the view. Lifting the paper she letting kitty cat green eyes scan the article for anything important.-
"Local vampire executioner....hmmmm looks like Ashes has been busy."
-Her voice was a sultry purr as she spoke aloud to no one in particular. Flipping open her phone she made a quick call to Ashes cell phone. Leaving a message at the beep.-
"Hello my lovely Ashes. I was just reading about you in the paper you naughty boy. Does Marcus know you've been making trouble in his club? Meet me for dinner....at that little Indian place in Town Square. We'll sit on the floor and eat with our hands. Say....six o'clock. I'll see you there dahling."
